Already we can hear people saying “leave the possums alone, they are so cute”.
Yes, we agree. They are … in Australia. In Australia they are a protected native species. But in New Zealand they are considered one of the biggest pests, causing significant agricultural and conservation damage. The Australian brushtail possum was introduced into New Zealand in 1837 to establish a fur trade.
Since that time, their population has swollen to around 30 million, most likely more than the total number of sheep in New Zealand …baaaad news!!
On a good note though, several companies have made use of the possum fur and have adopted and refined the practice of combining possum fibre (or eco fur) with merino wool. The resulting products are beautifully warm and soft. The possum fibre has a hollow core, helping it to trap air. This extraordinary characteristic makes it much warmer than a 100% wool garment.
Interesting to note: there are only two animals that produce hollow core fibres – possums and polar bears.
The Bower Birds stocks possum fibre and wool products from three reputable suppliers: MerinoSnug, Merinomink™, and Lothlorian. Each of these companies is happy to fulfill single customer orders from The Bower Birds.
